In comparison to their rural neighbours, urban heat islands tend to have worse water and air quality due to the excess amount of pollutants (waste products from vehicles, industry, and people) being emitted. The urban landscape and infrastructure blocks these pollutants from dispersing and thus remain in the air at extremely high concentrations. As for water quality, the warm atmosphere inevitably warms the water which ends up flowing into local streams and is no longer an acceptable habitat for native species that are adapted to cooler aquatic environment which leads to massive ecological imbalance (4).
