Typically, trees are one of the most reliable and readily avaialbe carbon sinks. However, contrary to popular belief, Canada's forests actually emit more CO2 than they absorb. Due to forest fires and insect infestations the countrie's managed forests emitted around 78 megatons of carbon dioxide. In fact, Canada's forests have not acted as a carbon sink since 2001. This is widely unknown because under international agreements, Canada is permitted to eliminate forests when accounting for the nation's total GHG emissions (6). These secret emissions are contributing to poor air quality thus exacerbate the previously mentioned health consequences.
